Maintenance of a battery

The lead-acid batteries have come of age, since its inception and during the period have gone to extensive researches. That led to the induction of Wet Charged Maintenance Free Batteries and Dry Charged Maintenance Free Batteries besides the regular conventional batteries. And each type of battery is having its advantage and disadvantages. Therefore before deciding to make the replacement the customer should understand the difference between the two and then accordingly decide about the replacement. Wet Charged MF series of battery comes filled with electrolyte and it is easy and convenient to use at once, but not suitable for long term storage as they would require periodical additional charging and voltage check after six months of storage, until they are put into actual service. Instead the Dry Charged Maintenance Free FB Thunder maker series of battery is the only MF battery with excellent Dry-Charge performance available in the market. One can store Thunder maker for a long period up to 24 months without pouring electrolyte. Besides this the other major advantages of Dry-Charged MF series battery over Wet-Charged MF series battery are that it is long lasting, dependable, hassle free like other MF, once put it on operation after filling the electrolyte. Where the climate is comparatively genial, Thunder maker does not require additional water topping until the ends of its life.

Selecting the size

Replacement battery should be equal or exceed the OE battery in ratings. A replacement battery must have the same voltage as the OE battery, and in most cases, it should be of the same polarity.

Safe Battery Installation

  • Due to up gradation of auto technology, most cars have a memory and are fitted with various gadgets. These settings need to be noted before disconnecting battery. Please follow manufacturer's instruction manual for other necessary precautions.
  • Disconnect ground cable first (Usually the negative cable)
  • Remove old battery, note the positions of the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals. Mark the cables if necessary.
  • Clean cable connections well, or replace worn out cables.
  • Install new battery and secure it properly with the hold down assembly.
  • Make sure the terminals do not touch any metal mounting, engine or body parts.
  • Connect ground cable last to avoid sparks.

Safe Charging

  • The golden rule of safe battery charging is to always read the charger's instructions, before charging a battery.
  • Make sure you are in a well ventilated area and are wearing proper eye protection.
  • Turn the charger and timer 'OFF', before connecting the leads to the battery. So as to avoid dangerous sparks.
  • Connect charger leads to the battery. Red positive (+) lead to the positive (+) terminal and black negative (-) lead to the negative (-) terminal. If the battery is still in the vehicle, connect the negative lead to the engine block to serve as the ground. (If the vehicle is positive grounded, connect the positive lead to the engine block.)
  • Make sure all the leads to the connections are tight.
  • Set timer; switch on the charger and slowly increase charging rate till desired ampere is reached
  • In case battery becomes hot, or if a violent gassing or spewing of electrolyte occurs, reduce charging rate or better still, temporarily halt the charger.
  • Always remember to turn 'OFF' charger, before removing leads from the battery to avoid any dangerous sparks.
  • Never try to charge a visibly damaged or frozen battery.

Safe Booster Cable Operation

  • When jump starting, always wear proper eye protection and never lean on battery.
  • Do not jump start a damaged battery.
  • Inspect both batteries properly before connecting booster cables.
  • Make sure all vent caps are tight and level. And then place a damp cloth over the vent caps of both batteries.
  • Ensure that the vehicles are not touching each other and both their ignitions are turned 'OFF'
  • Connect positive (+) booster cable to the positive (+) terminal discharged battery.
  • Connect other end of positive (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal of assisting battery.
  • Connect negative booster cable to the negative (-) terminal of assisting battery.
  • Carefully make final connection of negative (-) cable to engine block of stalled vehicle, away from battery.
  • Start vehicle and remove cables in reverse order of connections.
